As soon as you get to the Medina of Marrakech (equivalent of downtown) you will be introduced to the main square Jemaa El Fna: The heart of Marrakech.
It quickly became our essential, our point of reference, the heart of our map, our canteen and somehow a piece of our heart too.
Jemaa El Fna is one of these place that seem to be a living entity.
You can see it waking up gently around 8am wearing its simplest cloths and getting ready for the day. Few hours later, it is awake. The energy started flowing into its powerful arteries. The square gets gradually busier, leaving less room for people and bringing more animation. After lunch, Jemaa El Fna seems tired from all this agitation and rest for an hour or two. It needs to get ready for the evening’s big show. Like every other night of the week, it is gonna be big, spectacular, extraordinary. Every sense and every taste will be satisfied. Music, dance, magic potions, exotic animals, marvelous spices, strange ingredients: you will find everything and maybe even more.
Jemaa El Fna is more than an experience: It’s a feeling that you get. It is magical and it doesn’t get old. Each day something new comes to your attention. You have to be open minded: test, try to understand, ask, share. When you are there, you are part of this entity so interact with it. Let Jemaa El Fna surprise you and see what it has to offer.
Jemaa El Fna has been added to the intangible cultural heritage by Unesco.
